The Stand has been labeled as the best post-apocalyptic book ever by a lot of King’s fans. When a subject breaks out of a secure biological testing facility, he exposes humankind to a deadly strain of flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the population in a matter of mere weeks. Those who survive have become desperate.
There are no aliens, evil spirits, or Native American burial grounds in sight. The story begins when a celebrated but jaded author loses control of his car on his way through a treacherous mountain pass. Alone and unconscious, our hero seems all but lost when, miraculously, a local good Samaritan happens by and comes to his rescue. She holds him hostage, forcing him to write another novel that brings the main character back to life. She motivates him through torture.
Carrie White is a teenage girl picked on by her schoolmates. Luckily for her (or unluckily for them), she has telekinetic powers that lead to a prom-night massacre. Carrie was King’s first big success and he wrote the story in a closet in his trailer.
Set in King’s beloved Maine, the tale blends his customary love for small-town life with a classic horror theme: vampires. A schoolteacher and his girlfriend fight back against a town full of bloodsuckers.
