It is not uncommon for books to made into movies or shows. But, whenever this happens, the age-old debate of whether the book was better or movie begins. However. the movies and shows continue to be made and people love watching them. In fact, some of the movies and shows have become so famous that people often forget than it was based out of a book. Sacred Games is a great example of this.

I bring to you a list of movies and shows based on books that you should watch out for in 2020.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

Artemis fowl is a series of eight fantasy novels written by Irish author Eoin Colfer. The book series tells the tale about a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind and his battles with underground fairies. Disney has been working on adapting this series into a movie since 2016. The movie by the same name was finally presented in June 2020. The movie is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Ferdia Shaw and Dame Judi Dench in titular roles. The story for the first film is based on the first two novels in the series.

Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth

Vikram Seth’s Suitable Boy is bring made into a television series by BBC and is being directed by Mira Nair. The series is set to release later this month. The six-part series was commissioned by BBC, in May 2019. The series will be available to audiences in India via Netflix later this year.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

John Green’s book was loved by the audience and has already been into a Hollywood movie of the same name in 2014. Bollywood too is ready with its own version of the book titled Dil Bechara. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput along with Sanjana Sanghi. This adaptation of the novel keeps most of its essence, but the names and locations have been changed to fit the Indian scenario. The movie was released on the OTT platform Hotstar yesterday.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

The book was made into a drama mini-series of the same name which premiered on Hulu on March 18, 2020. The narrative follows the closely intertwined lives of the Richardson Family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who take over their lives. The series has a powerful cast which includes Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.

Emma by Jane Austen

Jane Austen’s works have been made into pretty successful movies. This one is no exception. The comic genius of Jane Austen’s writing coupled with a screenplay written by Eleanor Catton makes for a delightful movie about Regency-era England. The latest movie adaptation was released on February 14, 2020, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Mia Goth and Callum Turner.

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells

Released late in February, the movie stars Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and James Lanier. Directed by Leigh Whannell the novel takes a turn towards horror and science-fiction. In the movie, a young woman is trying to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend after his apparent suicide. But, she learns along the way he can become invisible, making for a spine-chilling movie.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting

Originally published in 1920, Hugh Lofting’s series about a doctor who can converse with animals has been made into many film adaptations. The most recent one stars Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor John Dolittle. The narrative has him traveling to a magical island to cure Queen Victoria, with the help of his talking animal friends.
