The concept of traveling back in time to fulfill a prophecy is not new but the way Author Khyati has managed to narrate it in the Kalith series and the fact that the book is set in Ancient India makes it really interesting. We at thenotoriousreader knew that we had to get in touch with her to know more about her books and writing style.
Khyati Agrawal Gupta is a novelist and a doodle artist by profession (founder of the personalized doodle merchandise company dOOdle BARF, which was started in 2015). She is an animation and multimedia graduate with a diploma in psychological counseling. An avid fan of fantasy fiction, she likes to spend her free time working as a freelance scriptwriter, watching American television series, reading, exploring new places and cuisines, doodling, and learning new things.
What inspires you to pick up your pen and write?
The Kalithverse means everything to me. It is the world I live through. And so I don’t really need to make an effort to sit down to write. Ever since I was a child I was an avid reader, and writing was the natural next step. I started doing freelance scriptwriting for Animation studios during my graduation and soon after I started working on the first book in the Kalith series.
Can you please give us some more information about your book?
The Kalith series follows the journey of nine warriors, each with their own unique superpowers and backstories and how they function together as The King’s Nine as the series takes them into some very strange lands and they are faced with fiery, cunning and brutal super villains.
Can you please tell us more about the main characters of the book?
There are nine main characters. But Kalith is the main protagonist. We see the story through Kalith’s eyes. He is a phasor. His journey started when he had accidentally traveled back in time and he reached ancient India where he met the rest of the eight students, discovered his past and fulfilled the prophecy that had been made in his name.
Why did you choose to write about this particular topic?
I have always been a massive fan of the fantasy fiction genre. And I have an undying love for the superhero genre, their stories, and their worlds. India does not have a lot of fantasy fiction books or superhero series. And I missed reading Indian stories in this genre as I was growing up. And so when I decided to write, this was the obvious choice.
Why did you choose this particular genre? Will you be trying your hand at any other genre?
I love fantasy fiction and I will probably write in that genre forever. However, if I do decide to write in another genre I will try my hand at writing a thriller, mystery series.
When should we expect your next book? What will it be about?
My next book will be the third book in the Kalith series. It will be out next year.
If not a writer, what would have been the career of your choice?
I am a professional doodle artist. And I do work as a doodle artist side by side. So that would have been my fulltime career choice.
Can you tell us about your favourite author/ authors?
J. K. Rowling is my childhood hero. Other authors I love are George R. R. Martin, Sydney Sheldon, Rick Riordan, etc.
What do you like to do when you are not busy writing?
I love creating art. I love watching American television series. I am a big-time foodie and I love trying out new outlets.
Are there any words of wisdom that you would like to share with our readers?
There is probably nothing more fulfilling than reading. The stories we read, stay with us. The journeys we experience in the books, change us. They expand our point of view, they help give an insight into so many things that we can’t experience ourselves. You have a gift if you can read. So keep reading! Keep taking out time for it. And do read the
Kalith series if you have missed having a great superhero fantasy fiction series growing up.
