Books are magic. There is nothing better than sitting down in your favorite reading spot with a good book in your hand. Even though you might be a full-fledged reading pro and know a lot about the books you’ve ever read, chances are you don’t know all the things about actual books. So here are a few fun and random facts about books:

  • In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust is the longest novel which exists. This masterpiece made its mark in Guinness Book of World Records and could quite easily double up as a mightily effective doorstop with 13 volumes clocking up nearly 1.3 million words.

  • The largest book in the world is The Klencke Atlas at 1.75 meters tall (about 5 feet 9 inches) and 1.90 meters wide (about 6 feet 3 inches when open).

  • The longest sentence ever printed is 823 words. According to Barnes and Noble, the sentence exists in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.

  • The first book that was written using the typewriter was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

  • Top 3 most read books in the world are The Holy Bible, Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, and the Harry Potter series.

  • The first book described as a “best-seller” was Fools Of Nature by US writer Alice Brown in 1889.

  • Alice in Wonderland is based on a real 10-year-old girl. Her name was Alice Liddell, and her family was close friends with author Lewis Carroll. While on a boating trip, she asked him to tell her a story — and that’s how Alice was born.

  • Previously, books used to be chained to shelves in libraries, in order to prevent stealing.

  • There’s a word for loving the smell of old books, it is known as “Bibliosmia”
