The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino is a definite page-turner. It is a psychological thriller that will leave the readers dazzled. Set in the city of Tokyo, the story focuses on Yasuko, her daughter Misato and their neighbor and maths genius Ishigami.
Yasuko is a single mother, working in a Tokyo bento shop when her ex-husband Togashi walks back into her life. She divorced him after he became an abusive drunk who took her money for gambling. She changes jobs, her daughter’s school, and her address in order to get rid of him but one day he walks back into her life. He comes into her apartment and provokes her and Misato, this ends up in the mother-daughter duo murdering him. They are ready to turn themselves in to the police when their neighbor calls and offers them help to get rid of the body.
Once you start reading the book, the murder will take place within the first two chapters but what will keep you hooked is how the mother and daughter get away with murder with the help of Ishigami. When Detective Kusanagi of the Tokyo Police will try to piece together the events of that day, he will be confronted by the most puzzling, mysterious circumstances he has ever investigated. Nothing will quite make sense. It will take a genius to understand the genius behind this particular crime.
The Devotion of Suspect X is an excellent crime thriller. The book offers a fresh take on the classic mystery’s intellectual struggle between the protagonist and antagonist. This adds to it all the right amounts of tension and pacing. You will definitely try to solve the mystery before the other characters. The book will make you redefine devotion and trust in an otherwise complete stranger. This is the first book I read by the author and now I am a fan. If you like reading crime thrillers then you must definitely read this book.
