The Henna Artist: Book Review

The Henna Artist is Alka Joshi’s debut novel. I had heard a lot about the book before finally reading it and I am glad that I did. The book is an attempt made by Alka Joshi to imagine how her mother’s life would have been if she had not married and had children at a very young age. Set in Jaipur of the 1950s the book is beautifully written. It is a refreshing tale of an unapologetic woman in her thirties who knows what she wants and how to get it.

Lakshmi Shastri is a sought out henna artist. A favourite among the upper-class women of Jaipur, she is trying to make her place in the world. Married to an abusive husband at a very young age, she runs away and comes to the pink city. Just, when she thinks that things are going her way, her past catches up with her. Her husband manages to track her down and brings with him her sister, one that she did not even know she had. Stuck at a crossroads, Lakshmi now has to make decisions that will change the course of her life forever.

One thing that stands out about this book for me is the fact that everything is very realistic. There is no easy way to get out of situations, Joshi tries to tell the truth the way it is. She chooses to portray things just the way they are. The characters have to deal with all the situations in their life the same way we probably would have. Though the caste system, gender inequality, and the stark economic differences are not a part of the central theme of the book these topics are embedded in the story.

My Opinion

The Henna Artist is a must-read for every woman out there trying to make her way in a man’s world. It is a beautiful story that is vividly written with realistic characters. It is all about finding the courage to make your own way in life. To make your own decisions, make mistakes, and then have the courage to stand by them and live through the consequences with your head held high.
