Blurb

Beaten and brutally raped, her body is never found. However, the killers make one mistake. They leave a witness, a witness who has nothing to live for except revenge. And when he crosses the boundaries of time to make the guilty pay, a whole lot of dark characters come to light. There is Valentine, the superstar brand ambassador who sells anything for a price; there is Medici, a pharmaceutical company fraudulently manufacturing banned drugs; there is the perverted and sinister minded Dr. Ranga, and there is Este, the prostitute whose dark secret will blow up a daughter’s sanity. So, is there another murder waiting to happen? Will Police Inspector Dorab Silva be able to connect the clues to prevent another crime? Will these gods of greed be exposed? And yes, you will be surprised by who you will find there, finally. Deeply unsettling, Hungry Gods takes a hard look at greed for wealth and power.

Review

Hungry Gods is a crime fiction work saturated with extreme violence, Substance abuse and secret sex clubs. The story starts with the description of a child witnessing his mother being  brutally raped and murdered. The child is extremely disturbed and vows to take revenge. Then the narrative introduces us to various characters who are one way or the other related to a pharmaceutical company called Medici. This comany have been under scanner for few years because of their unethical practices related to manufacture of illegal drugs and medicines.

The story then progresses as we are taken into the minds of people who are hungry for money, power and sex. In the middle of all, Inspector Silva, who himself is fighting with his inner demons, struggle to solve series of grotesque crimes that start happening everywhere. Clearly someone is out to take revenge and they won’t stop anytime soon. The book takes you into the dark side of entertainment industry and reveals the ugly secrets behind the glamorous facades of this glittering world.

Characters:

The story is full of diverse range of characters each having their own set of strange perversions. I personally found all the characters very repulsive and found no redeeming qualities. From a superstar film actor who loves money and have a kinky secret sex life to a lawyer for a major company with pedophile tendencies, the stories are not for someone with faint heart. Prostitutes and drugs show up in almost every other scene with several characters indulging heavily in substance abuse. The characters showcase the greedy, sadistic and narcissistic side of human nature.

Language:

The language used is easy to read and understand. There is an extreme use of profane language and derogatory remarks for women by several characters. While the vocabulary is sophisticated but smooth to read, it might be difficult for people to read who are uncomfortable with extreme use of profanity.

Narration:

There are several narrators of the story and the inner monologue of the characters reveals their most perverted thoughts and intentions. Each character expresses their thoughts in form of stream of consciousness and reader can experience their greed, lust and fear quite tangibly.

Plot-line: The plot line revolves around the dark secrets of entertainment industry and malpractices by pharmaceutical companies. It is a typical story of revenge against people who have wronged and make them suffer. The story could have been a little longer since I felt the end was just a little abrupt.

Cover:

The cover of the book and the name are two things that attracts he reader the most. The colors are vibrant, eye catchy, dark and mysterious and the illustration of classical dancer foreshadows the truths of entertainment industry later in the story.

Parents Guide: (might contain spoilers)

Final Thoughts

This is story of revenge laced with crime, lust and greed. The book is extremely violent and definitely not for people with faint heart. The characters are very black and white and don’t exhibit any qualities of grey areas. It was a difficult book for me to go through not because of intense violence and gore, but because I felt like there is no hope left for humanity and at the end, all humans would be left are as animals with our primordial emotions like anger, lust and greed ruling our actions. While the book attempts to showcase as a mirror to some reality of our society, it also leaves the reader with a feeling of hopelessness and despair. In terms writing, the book is absolutely brilliant and I definitely couldn’t predict what would happen on the next page. The readers are hooked from the very first page and won’t be able to put it down till they are finished. If you are not bothered by extreme violence and gore, this book is definitely worth picking up.
