The Watchmaker’s Doctor is the first novella in Erase and Rewind series. The story is about Anaya, a 35 year old doctor living the life of regret. Due to many decisions that she took in her teenage and young adult life, she is currently miserable and hates her life. She takes care of a retired watchmaker, Gregory for an year. On her last visit to meet him just before her death, he gifts her an exquisite gift, a watch which has the abilities to turn back time.
She now has to make a choice of going back to one time in her life and correct one mistake that she regrets till date. She decides she want to correct the decisions that she took as a naive teenager and is astounded by the rippling effect it has on rest of her life and the people around her. She also has a non-curable Bipolar disorder and it is striking to see how much of an undiagnosed mental disorder completely change the way you live your life.
Perhaps the most important lesson to learn from this book for me personally would be to be smart while we are young and not follow the herd blindly while making career and life altering choices. We have a ton of books and movies which motivate us to follow our heart, live without regrets and do what we want in our life. But this is the book which show us the reality of what might happen if we take the major decisions of our life with a complete disregard to its consequences. Hence, it becomes a great read for all the young audience who might still be in the stage of their life when they are taking life changing decisions.
The Watchmaker’s Doctor is a thought provoking and captivating read and takes the readers on a thriller ride on its short read. It is particularly great for people wanting to explore new genres and test the waters with the sci-fi fiction. It takes us on a journey of Anaya’s life plagued with bipolar disorder filled with constant highs and lows without too much of sci fi mumbo jumbo, which is a great positive for new readers of this genre.
I was completely engrossed while reading it and was able to finish it in two sittings. I wish the book was a little longer and I could spend more time with the characters which would have helped in intensifying the story even more. But I am glad that it is part of a series, hence there is more to read.
Some of my favourite quotes from this book are:
“Death can’t be cheated, but there are endless ways that life can be lived.”
“With so many choices to make in life, the line was hair-thin between success and failure, having money or being broke, being loved or hated, alive or dead.”
“How readily we crush our dreams, without even turning over the first stone, so willing to be victims of circumstance.”
The author has taken a great initiative towards awareness for mental illness, its cure and prevention. 10% of G. M. T.
